Katy Perry has caused somewhat of an uproar in the news with her desire to purchase a former Los Angeles Catholic convent.
As CNN reported, the convent, once home to the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, was recently sold by two nuns to restaurateur Dana Hollister for $15.5 milion. But the church's archdiocese says the property is theirs to sell not the nuns'. Hollister, who bought the convent on May 20, has since been given a court order to show the property to other interested buyers, like Perry.
But the nuns said they don't want to sell the convent which has a swimming pool, hilltop property and view of the San Gabriel Mountains to Perry because they do not approve of the pop star's flirtatious and immodest ways, as seen in her music videos, CNN reported.
"Well, I found Katy Perry, and I found her videos and ... if it's all right to say, I wasn't happy with any of it," Sister Rita Callanan told the Los Angeles Times.
And perhaps Sister Callanan is onto something. Sister Callanan said Perry told the nuns she does not want to buy the convent for formal religious purposes. The bubble gum pop star wants to buy the convent so she could live with her mother and grandmother, sit in the meditation garden, sip green tea and find herself, according to The Daily Caller.
The desire to buy a Catholic convent to find her spirituality is yet another confusing religious move by Perry, who has had a lengthy struggle with Christianity and religion, according to The Daily Beast.
Perry grew up in a Christian home with parents who were both Pentecostal ministers, The Daily Beast reported. She couldnt read secular books or novels and called deviled eggs angel eggs. She also sang in her church choir, which eventually led to Perrys debut album, published under the name Katy Hudson, which was a gospel album aimed at a religious audience, according to The Daily Beast.
But that didnt last long. In what may have been an overzealous reading of a bad omen, Perry did a total 180, pushing down her religious upbringing, The Daily Beast reported.
From there, Perrys career ballooned into a cotton candy fantasy of pop hits, like Teenage Dream, California Gurls and a song that will surely play over and over this weekend Firework.
But this came with a religious cost. Perry denounced her Christian faith and God upon topping the charts. In 2010, her marriage with actor Russell Brand began with "a lavish Hindu wedding held in Rajasthan" where the couple embraced the Hindu deity Lord Ganesha, The Times of India reported.
Three years after her marriage to Brand, though, Perry told Marie Claire magazine in 2013 that she didnt follow one particular faith, but still had faith in God.
"I don't believe in a heaven or a hell or an old man sitting on a throne, Perry told Marie Claire magazine. Im not Buddhist, I'm not Hindu, I'm not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God."
A few months later, Perry pointed in jest toward religion with the music video for her hit song Dark Horse, in which she plays an Egyptian goddess. The video initially included an Islamic symbol that was later cut because it offended Muslims across the world, which I wrote about in 2014.
Later that year, Perry stepped away from Eastern religions and turned to God again for giving her strength to survive her depression, according to The Christian Post.
"Sometimes you can be blinded by your extreme emotion," she said in an interview with Australian TV host Rove McManus. "I definitely was looking for answers and during that time, yeah, I was depressed and sad, and there were thoughts, but there were never actions, thankfully. But I wanted to share that side of my story because I know that there are so many other people out there that have gone through things like that."
