Most people his age are only thinking about assuming a position of leadership he recently assumed. For the past year, Danny Eason had filled the pulpit in the absence of a pastor, but recently was appointed as interim pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Hinesville.
The Hinesville resident may be only 23, but he is proud and humbled to have been appointed to such a position of responsibility and service.
“We want to share Jesus Christ with Liberty County and beyond, to include statewide and nationwide,” he said. “I have been involved in the church all my life. I was the youth director for several years, and taught vacation Bible school.
“We are also looking at ways of getting in contact with new members of the community without being intrusive. This summer, we plan to host block parties at different members’ houses. People can come and have hamburgers and hot dogs if they so desire,” the pastor said.
“There is a difference in changing the gospel and the way the gospel is presented. We want to put it in a way people can relate. We are evaluating our programs to see if they accomplish the ‘great commission.’”
Faith Baptist Church was created by Gum Branch Baptist Church members. The church has various programs for members and the community; a men’s ministry, women’s ministry, Sunday school department, food pantry and young adult class. The church is also involved in seasonal mission programs nationally and worldwide.
“Our young adult class is growing. It is a very inspiring class for the young people. This Sunday, the youths will lead the worship service. They said they wanted to be more involved in the services,” Eason said.
Faith Baptist has a family fun night once a quarter. On Easter, the church had a big dinner and egg hunt for children and the community.
“I have a heart for the military. We reach out to them and train them how to be disciples of Christ,” Eason said.
Faith Baptist has about 10 military members who are deployed and about 10 more who will deploy this summer.
“We are working on getting our Web site up so our deployed members can access the sermons via the Web.”
Eason said members stay in close contact with deployed members’ families, and the junior church members send letters to the soldiers.
Eason credits Jim Ellett, director of missions for the Sunbury Baptist Association in Midway, for helping him in his spiritual walk “He is a great source of encouragement, advice and support,” he said.
Eason’s advice to young ministers is not to become discouraged. “God can use anybody, no matter what their background.”
Prior to becoming the full-time interim pastor, Eason was employed with Sign Concepts in Hinesville. He is currently a student at Brewton-Parker College, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Christian studies. He relaxes by playing with his daughter, Jessica.
