Fathers are special people, but often, they are overlooked in the midst of celebrating and honoring mothers.
Sunday was their day.
Father’s Day was inaugurated in the early part of the 20th century to complement Mother’s Day and to honor and celebrate fatherhood.
In Liberty County, many fathers have made great contributions to the community, among them, 91-year-old Horace Bacon.
Bacon is the proud father of 13 children, eight girls and five boys.
“My first wife (Sarah Baker Bacon) and I had seven children (five girls and two boys),” Bacon said.
After his first wife’s death, he married Ella Mae Roberts Bacon. They had six children, three girls and three boys.
His wife, Ella Mae, is deceased, as well as one of his children.
“My oldest child is 71 years old. He was born on Sept. 13, 1936,” Bacon said.
The lifelong resident of the Holmestown community attended school there, and spent many years doing hard work to provide for his family, such as logging, cross tire cutting and hauling pulpwood. He retired in the early 1990s.
His advice to parents is to raise their children the right way while they are young.
“I taught them not to steal, and not do all kinds of things. What goes around comes around,” Bacon said.
He is longtime member of Zion Temple Holiness Church in Midway where he has served as chairman of the deacons board.
“I have been a member of Zion Temple since 1933,” Bacon said.
Despite his age, he remains active in his church. His favorite song is “Down Through the Years, the Lord’s Been Good to Me.” His favorite scripture is the 13th chapter of the Gospel of St. John.
Latrelle Bacon, one of Horace Bacon’s grandchildren, said her grandfather is hard working.
“He loves his children and grandchildren. He will do anything to help them,” she said. “He instilled in me to do my best, learn how to work and to raise my children the right way.”
Rod Bacon, one of his sons, said his father taught them to be honest.
“He taught us to work for what we get, and he brought us up in the church. My father has been a positive role model. He provided for us, and it has carried over into my life,” he said.
