Free Sesame Street shows on Stewart

Free tickets for the two Sesame Street shows at Fort Stewart are available for pickup on a first-come, first-served basis at the Fort Stewart Leisure Travel Office in the PX Furniture Mall.

Cookie Monster, Grover, and Elmo will bring excitement and encouragement to military children and their families at Newman Fitness Center on Nov. 7 and 8. Showtime is 6 both nights. Doors open at 5:30.

The free shows are a co-production between USO and the Sesame Street Workshop and are part of the Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families Tour.

The 45-minute show comprises a fun-filled character performance, with giveaways and outreach materials.

Vineyard tour

Register by Nov. 7 for a Leisure Travel trip to Southeast Georgia's first winery, Meinhardt Vineyards in Statesboro. It begins at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 10.

Autumn brunch

Bring your family and friends to Club Stewart for the Autumn Brunch, offering a variety of choices from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday.

Diners can enjoy a full omelette bar, carved-to-order turkey roulades Cajun style (or traditional sage rubbed), beef medallions with marsala, broiled tilapia with crab and lemon butter, and side dishes. The dessert and coffee bar will feature poached pears in chocolate liquor and assorted treats.

Advanced tickets at Club Stewart cost is $14.95 for adults and $6.45 for children. The price at the door will be $17.95 for adults and $7.45 for children. Kids under 4 eat free.

College/financial aid workshop

Preparing for college? Representatives from the Military Child Education Coalition and the Georgia Student Finance Commission will provide information and answer questions at a Preparing for College/Financial Aid Workshop from 5-6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at the CYSS SKIES Instructional Center, across from Diamond Elementary School on Davis Avenue.

Wildlife photos

Registration is open until Nov. 9 for the 2012 Wildlife Photo Contest for amateur photographers at Fort Stewart and Hunter.

Entries must be turned in to the Stewart or Hunter Pass and Permit Office. Entry fees are $5 per photo  for ages 4-15 and $10 per photo for adults.

'I Wanna be Like Mike Nite'

Can you move like the King? Dress the part, put on some wheels and show us your moves from 6-9 p.m. Nov. 17 at Corkan Family Fun Center. The $5 per person cost includes skate rental.

 

Basketball and cheerleading

Registration is under way for youth basketball and cheerleading on Hunter. Sign-up for boys and girls basketball for ages 5-17 and cheerleading, ages 5-13, ends Nov. 16. Coed team practices begin Nov. 26. Games are played on Hunter, Habersham YMCA and the Jewish Educational Alliance.

Hunter Turkey Trot

Everyone’s invited to the Family Turkey Trot Fun Run/Walk along Hunter's Perimeter Road starting at 10 a.m. Nov. 17. Refreshments and a drawing for gift certificates for Thanksgiving turkeys will follow the race.

There’s no charge, and participants can register starting at 9:30 a.m. on the day. The run/walk will cover 5K or 1.5 miles.

Company-level basketball

Registration continues until Nov. 21 for the Company-Level Basketball League at Fort Stewart. There is no charge.

Companies interested in playing need to submit a letter of intent to play to the Sports Office in the Bennett Sports Complex.

Games will be played at Newman Fitness Center beginning Dec. 3.

Thanksgiving hours at Corkan

All Corkan Family Recreation Area facilities will be closed Nov. 22 for Thanksgiving.

All facilities will operate from 11:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Nov. 23-25. There will be no Toddler Time, Bowlopolis “8 for 8” bowling league or private parties.
