'Frozen' is great on a lot of levels

Disney's "Frozen" follows the usual character line up: strong lead and villian with wacky sidekicks and all with big eyes. It works in this movie. - photo by Studio photo

It may be getting chilly outside, but I know a film that's completely frozen.
"Frozen,” Disney's new animated feature now in theaters, was the top-grossing film in America last weekend, dropping the multi-week champ, "The Hunger
Games: Catching Fire," down to No. 2. This cold-weather treat is loosely based on the dark Hans Christian Andersen tale, "The Snow Queen." In Disney's version, set in a Scandinavian locale, the story is about the love between royal sisters Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) and her big sister, Elsa (Idina Menzel). Elsa was born with the extraordinary power to create ice and snow. When this ability gets out of her control, the kingdom falls under the cover of a relentless winter.
Only Anna has the heart to find her sister, save the kingdom and return summertime to the land.
Was I wild about going to sample this film? Not exactly. In my opinion, the trailers didn't present the storyline very well, and I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into.
The second my experience began, however, I was pleasantly surprised.
This film merges the classic magic of Disney with modern, robust themes.
It was funny — very funny. The story was engaging, the characters were fantastic, and even the singing, of which there was plenty, was palatable. That means even if the modern musical isn't your cup of tea, you won't want to totally gouge your eyes out.
Don't look for some dashing prince to save the day. Our girls deal with complex issues and solve their problems on their own.
That means ... I'm a fan!
