Long County has several different activities planned today and Monday in honor of Veterans Day.
Today, several churches in the community are having services and special activities. A New Beginning Church will be its “Salute the Troops Sunday” from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.  The event will include a corn-hole tournament, bounce house, inflatable slide, obstacle course and a mechanical bull. There also will be free food and prizes.  
“We will have a special speaker that day to honor and give thanks for all of our veterans. God bless America and her troops,” Pastor Tom Gardner said.
Elim Baptist Church will put on a special program called “An Honor to Serve” at 11 a.m. There will be a video presentation honoring local veterans with pictures and a performance by the youth praise team.  
“Our service men and women have done so much for us, and being able to show some pictures of local vets, from all the way back to World War II to those who are now serving overseas, helps everyone really appreciate them even more,” praise team coordinator Gina Riddle said.
There also are festivities Monday, with schools planning special programs.  
“We love having these programs,” Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters said. “I want our kids to be a part of Veterans Day. When these vets come to the schools, and our kids stand up and applaud the men and women who are serving or have a meal with them, the kids experience what the day is all about, and it shows these men and women how much we value them.”  
Long County High School will have its “Remembering Our Veterans” program at 1:45 p.m. featuring a guest speaker. Each veteran and active-duty service member will receive a gift. Long County Middle and Walker Elementary schools will have their annual “Breakfast with a Vet” at 8:30 a.m. All vets and active-duty service members can enjoy a free breakfast with their children or grandchildren.  
Smiley Elementary School will have a special “Veteran’s Red, White and Blue Day,” in which all students and staff are encouraged to dress in red, white and blue.  
Waters said all veterans, active-duty service members and their families are invited to attend these programs.
