LUDOWICI — Long County Relay for Life team captains recently discussed final preparations for the May 1 event.
Long RFL Chairwoman Amy Nutting hosted the gathering at the Long County High School media center, and stressed the importance of getting more people involved.
“We need to cast wider nets in our community, because a wider net means more people, and more people mean more money for the cause” she said.
This year’s theme is based on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and is called the Walk of Hope.
“We want this year’s RFL to be remarkable, so that people will want to come back and do it again next year,” Nutting said.
One new idea was selling luminary tiki torches, to go along with the traditional candle luminaries.
“We will be selling the regular luminaries for $5 each and the tiki torches will be sold for $50 a piece, with the people who purchased them, being able to take them home after the night,” Nutting said.
Nutting also drew names for door prizes away.  The people in attendance also put spare change into a jar, and drew for it, with CMAD Construction winning the $16 to go toward their total.
The captains brainstormed and put out possible ideas for fundraisers.  Many already had several planned.
Nutting also reported on how the Long RFL was doing toward 2009 goals. She said goal for teams was 19, and there currently are 16, the goal for survivors was 60, and there were 9 registered, while the total monetary goal was $38,000, and $5,408 had been raised.
