The Long County Relay for Life Committee met for a breakfast Jan. 9 at the First Baptist Church of Ludowici to begin planning for the 2007 event set for May 4-5. Members from last year’s team were met with applause and praise for their work in 2006 for receiving the Rookie of the Year Award for Long County’s first year hosting an event.
In 2006, the Long County Relay had a fundraising goal of $10,750 and surpassed that goal by collecting more than $26,000. Hoping for at least six teams, organizers were pleased to have 14 groups to take part in the event. The American Cancer Society Relay for Life, South Atlantic Division, of which Georgia is included, presented 574 events last year, raising more than $69 million in the fight against cancer.
At the breakfast, the Rev. Marvin Leggette, a cancer survivor, spoke to those present about his surviving cancer and the meaning the event had for him. He especially spoke fondly in regards to the Survivors' Lap, and expressed how much that recognition means to the people who are fighting cancer.
“Knowing your community is behind you helps in the battle and also makes the victory for long-time survivors that much sweeter,” Leggette said.
During last year’s event, there were 56 people who participated in the Survivors’ Lap, and the goal for this year is to have at least 60.
Chairman for this year’s event will once again be Cynthia Foster and Cynthia Alexander will serve as co-chair. Foster can be reached at (912) 610-1668. Beverly Johnson will return to head up corporate sponsorship. She may be contacted at 545-9111. Terri Hrisak and Tina Delort are overseeing team recruitment. Lillian Simmons will once again be the chairman for Survivorship Development. She may be reached at 545-2517.
A new feature to be offered for anyone interested in the Long County Relay will be a web site. Teams may register and set up their own home pages, and team members and individuals may also set up a page. The site can be used to raise money via email and people can also register as survivors or join a team with it. The web site is www.acsevents.org/longcountyrelay.com
Upcoming meeting
Team meetings are set for the fourth Tuesday of each month at 3:30 p.m. in the Long County High School media center. The first meeting will be Jan. 23 and everyone is invited to attend.
