SAVANNAH — “Johnny Mercer and Me!,” a musical celebrating the life of American songwriter and singer John Herndon “Johnny” Mercer will make its Savannah debut at The Lucas Theatre at 8 p.m. Sept. 22.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Learning Center of Senior Citizens, Inc.
Written by Savannah native Miriam K. Center, the show reflects on Mercer’s music through the eyes of his longtime friend and confidante, Maxine. The musical features the works of Mercer and includes hits such as “Something’s Gotta Give,” “Jeepers Creepers” and “The Days of Wine and Roses.”
“I’m very excited and honored to be able to showcase this captivating musical while benefiting a cause dear to my heart, Senior Citizens, Inc.,” Miriam Center said. “I’m delighted to share and bring to you the incredible life of the Academy Award-winner Johnny Mercer, and to give a new perspective on the private and often tumultuous personal battles he faced right here in Savannah.”
Director Tom Coleman III of the Savannah Community Theater helped edit, cast and stage the production.
Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased at the Lucas Theater box office or online at www.seniorcitizensinc.org (click on the link for The Learning Center).
