Did you see the Oscars last weekend? USA Today reported the telecast, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, drew 43.7 million viewers, making it the most watched Academy Awards show in 14 years.
This week’s reviewed film, “Non-Stop,” definitely was not nominated for a golden statuette, but one cast member was. Lupita Nyong’o, freshly turned 31 years old, just took home the Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in the best picture winner, “12 Years a Slave.” The movie was her feature-film debut. With her Oscar win, she beat out one of my faves, Jennifer Lawrence, as well as Julia Roberts, Sally Hawkins and June Squibb.
“Non-Stop” puts star Liam Neeson in the role of an air marshal who is being framed for taking his flight hostage. Nyong’o guest stars as a stewardess and is joined by “Downton Abbey” star Michelle Dockery, Julianne Moore and Corey Stoll.
“Non-Stop” was everything a fan could hope for when it comes to a Liam Neeson action thriller. In fact, I dare say this script was a cut above “Taken.” It was a tiny bit smarter.
But, then again, we don’t go to these types of popcorn flicks to be mentally stimulated. In fact, it’s a little comical how similar this Neeson character is to others.
Still, it’s edge-of-your-seat, high tension and it delivers.
I’m a fan!
