The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Liberty County officially kicked off its fundraising efforts Jan. 9 with Mayor Jim Thomas signing a proclamation to declare Jan. 6-11 “Relay For Life Purple Passion Week.”
The Relay For Life of Liberty County will be from
7 p.m.-7 a.m. May 16–17 at the recreation department. Former and current cancer patients, those who have lost loved ones to cancer, families, businesses, faith-based and civic organizations, and anyone wanting to make a difference in the fight against cancer are invited to take part in this team event.
Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams hold fundraisers at their camp sites during the Relay.
“No single nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization in the U.S. has invested more to find the causes and cures of cancer than the American Cancer Society, and we are lucky to have a Relay for Life event right in our own backyard,” Relay For Life Chairwoman  Karen Bell said. “Not only does the event provide awareness and fellowship among our community, but the dollars raised through our local Relay For Life will help finish the fight against cancer and find a cure, plus provide a lot of local people with services to help them stay well and get well.”
