ATLANTA — Savannah-area customers and associates contributed more than $40,800 in six weeks to Kroger’s 2014 Can Hunger Campaign and $10,000 to a second initiative benefiting America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.
From Nov. 16-Dec. 24, Kroger customers supported the annual Can Hunger Campaign by purchasing $1, $3 and $5 icons. Each icon purchased benefited Feeding America food banks and helped to provide food to local families in need.
In addition, a two-week company-wide promotion “Bringing Hope to the Table” — in partnership with key suppliers — featured hundreds of products at sale prices. A portion of those proceeds also benefited the local food bank.
Kroger’s Atlanta Division, which includes Hinesville, raised more than $568,600 through Can Hunger and more than $191,500 from “Bringing Hope to the Table,” for a total of $760,100, or the equivalent of 2.9 million meals to support food banks across Georgia, eastern Alabama and South Carolina. The donated amount surpassed its $600,000 goal.
“The overwhelming amount of donations raised during this year’s Can Hunger initiative is a testament to the character and generosity of our Savannah-area customers and associates,” says Glynn Jenkins, director of communications and public relations for Kroger’s Atlanta Division. “Kroger is incredibly grateful for their donations and support as we work to help provide food for those who are less fortunate.”
Kroger’s Perishables Donations Partnership program allows food such as meat, produce and dairy products to be donated directly from Kroger stores to local food banks that are able to safely handle perishable foods.
Through its PDP program, Kroger donated more than 1.6 million pounds, the equivalent of 1.3 million meals of perishable foods to food banks in the region last year.
More than 50 million Americans lived in food insecure households last year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
