LUDOWICI -- Teachers and staff at Smiley Elementary planted a red oak in memory of Valerie Futch Smith on April 22.
The tree was planted on the new playground, behind the school. A retired teacher read a poem commemorating Smith's life as an educator and friend.
"Even though Valerie's life was short, she made a difference in the lives of many teachers, parents and children," Principal Sandy Jones said. "She will truly be missed by all."
