Smiley Elementary School in Long County held its annual Trunk-or-Treat celebration last Friday, and the event drew more than 1,000 students.
SES Principal David Edwards said there were 60 volunteers who decorated their trunks and gave out candy. Volunteers consisted of local businesses, churches, civic groups, community leaders, student groups and individuals.
Edwards said that during the day, over 1,100 students were given candy in a safe and healthy environment.
The principal said that when the school held its first Trunk-or-Treat, around 600 students were attending the school. However, with the county’s continuous growth, that number has almost doubled.
“The Trunk-or-Treat has become one of the most popular activities that we have at the school,” Edwards said. “It is a day that is looked forward to by both the kids and the adults who participate in it.”
