Here are some of the issues that area residents are discussing. The statements were phoned in anonymously, so the Courier does not vouch for their veracity, nor do we know what motivated the callers:

I think it’s a conflict of interest for so many teachers’ children to go the same school where their parents work. It is unfair to other kids because teachers’ kids are picked over them to be on committees, to play music and to play sports. This is unfair to all kids — especially when the parents are paying.

As a grandparent, I’ve seen a lot. I believe that after-school detention does more good than in-house detention. And both of them do a whole lot more good than suspension.

Walthourville City Council and city officials don’t need to be riding around on city time campaigning for the mayor of Walthourville. This needs to stop. I do not even live in Walthourville and I noticed this. This needs to stop, city employees. This needs to stop.

As a retired sergeant major, I’d like to advise the commander of the soldier accused of shooting little kittens to go ahead and get him over to Afghanistan right away.

It disturbs me that preachers are more interested in the quantity of the members instead of the quality of the members they have. They have all these members who are so dedicated to the church, but when they go home, their families are in shambles. Preachers need to preach the true order of God, which is love God first, marriage and family, then the church, then friends.

Long County doubled taxes both on the land sellers and buyers. The owners must pay for a full year and the buyers also must pay for their part of the year. No one is held accountable. Please vote these ignorant people out of office.

I just read an article about truancy and how kids are supposed to be in school. Great — I agree with that. Why is it that teachers can suspend kids for stupid stuff? They should learn to deal with kids. If they can’t, they shouldn’t be teachers. Something is wrong with the system when teachers no longer take care of problems in the classroom.

Four weeks I have been by the police station in Midway and there are always three cars parked at the station. We don’t need police officers sitting at the station. We need them circulating to the businesses, banks, Isle of Wight parks and keeping a check on what’s going on around here.
