Members of the Fort Stewart Enlisted Spouses' Club and their families met Thursday afternoon to place wreaths at the Desert Shield/Desert Storm Monument in observance of Veterans' Day. The monument, in the wooded area in front of the post exchange, was built and dedicated in 1991 to honor those soldiers from Fort Stewart who died in battle.
It was the first dedicated in the United States during the Desert Storm era and has come to symbolize not only those whose names are on it, but all soldiers who have served. Often, passersby stop, reflect and pray for our veterans, some leaving tokens and poems.
