I have so much to be thankful for and at this time of the year I am reminded to count my many blessings.
Just a few years ago, we had an opportunity to move to Liberty County full time. I am thankful for that. As much as I loved Dublin where my family lived for hundreds of years, 20 years ago I fell in love with the little house we have out on the marsh on the east end of the county. I always feel such a sense of peace out there.
It meant so much to me to move here full time in 2004. We had just recently gone through a devastating experience as my younger sister succumbed to a terminal brain tumor. I was so grateful she no longer had to suffer. I am thankful for that.
But as anyone who has gone through a painful experience in the loss of a loved one knows, it can really suck the wind out of you. It was a perfect time to start a new chapter in our lives. I am thankful for that.
Working with Keep Liberty County Beautiful is something I am thankful for as well. I had been on the board with the Dublin program for several years. I know what a valuable program this can be for a community.
But programs like this are nothing without those committed “environmental heroes” who make this program’s mission come to life. I am so thankful for advisory council members, like Leah Poole, who shares her many talents to make this community a better place. I am thankful for people, such as Terri Willett, Nelean Lewis and Gloria Cook, who work so hard to make a difference for their respective communities.
I am so thankful for Pamela Henderson, who is always ready to pitch in and help no matter how she feels. I wish I had space to name them all. They have all been so dedicated. I am thankful for that.
I am thankful for the schools and for Ginny Bennett for helping get program information to them. I am thankful to businesses, such as SNF Chemtall that help make Rivers Alive happen.
I am grateful to restaurants, such as McDonald’s and Applebees and many others, that have helped us get information out during the year on topics like recycling and stormwater pollution. We have reached thousands of people during the year that we may never have crossed paths with.
I am thankful to all the folks at the Coastal Courier — Sonya, Mark, Patty, Opal and so many more for helping us promote this program. I am thankful for all of them.
I am grateful for so many volunteers, such as Dot Moss, Sherri and Marcus Reddick, Ella Golden and her grandkids, and Pascal and Judy Brewer, and the Kiwanis Club. These and so many others have generously given their time, talents and expertise to make a difference.
I am thankful for people like Mary Beth Evans, Jim and Pat Bacote, and Sarah Brigdon, who are all working to enhance different historical resources in our community. Our historical heritage is such an essential part of Liberty County. Thankfully, we have many, many people in our community who are trying to keep that history alive. I am thankful to Neighborhood Watch coordinators, like Mrs. Fragosa and Michael Santiago, who work tirelessly to keep their neighborhoods safe and clean. I am thankful for all of them.
I am also thankful to those volunteers who wish to remain anonymous, like a local landscaper who helps maintain two beautification areas and some wonderful guys who have donned highly uncomfortable mascot costumes during the year at a variety of events. They truly know how much I appreciate their help.
I am thankful for all the folks I work with everyday with the county — Dave Sapp and the guys in the solid waste department, all the folks at the commissioners office, Clinton and his crew at the road department, the folks in the maintenance department, and the list goes on and on. They all step up and help so often. I am thankful for them and many more.
You know, Thanksgiving is not just a day to eat turkey and watch football. We all have so much and so many people in our daily lives to be thankful for. And I am thankful for that.
