The Community Chorus of the Liberty County Area Mass Choir will present a special performance of “Messiah: For Easter” at 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church on General Stewart Way.
The concert is free for the community and will feature several singers and soloists from local churches. The concert is under the direction of Ronald Calhoun and assisted by associate directors Donna Pearson and Davida Phillips.
The Liberty County Community and Area Mass Choir has been called an “ecumenical miracle” by civic and community leaders, Calhoun said.
In January 2003, Calhoun, the conductor and composer, was approached by local musicians to provide an outlet for singers in Liberty County and the surrounding area.
He volunteered his time and traveled more 100 miles to lead and conduct rehearsals, enabling him to create the Mass Choir and present the “100 Voices for Easter Concert” in April 2003 in Hinesville.
Since then, the Mass Choir has performed many community concerts, including  “Handel’s Messiah” at Fort Stewart, patriotic concerts in Hinesville and at Fort Pulaski National Monument, the annual Mayor’s Thanksgiving Service, the “I’m Amazed” concert at Marne Chapel on Fort Stewart, music performances of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and the Community Covenant Signing in 2008 at Fort Stewart.
The members of First United Methodist Church allow the choir to rehearse there for the performances.
The public is invited to Sunday’s concert. For more information, call St. Philip’s Episcopal Church at 876-2744 or 977-3322.
The LCCA Mass Choir will present a patriotic concert in July. Anyone interested in singing in this concert can email Hinesville music coordinator Eleanor Hudson at BEHud5@yahoo.com, call 876-7610 or email lcca.mass.choir@bellsouth.
