Downtown Hinesville will come alive Oct. 15-16 with an authentic German celebration known as OktoberFest. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the original Oktoberfest, which started as a royal Bavarian wedding in 1810.
Now in its second year, Hinesville’s OktoberFest will transform the downtown district into a Bavarian village with German cuisine, traditional yodeling and music, a marketplace, beer garden and more.
The festivities open at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, and the ceremonial beer keg tapping will be at 6 p.m. in the festhalle tent. The entertainment lineup features an encore appearance by yodeling comedienne, Manuela Horn, who doe s comedic skits. Liquid Ginger will rock festival-goers from 8 p.m.-midnight.
Saturday’s celebration begins at 11 a.m. and will feature a marketplace, kinder play area — both of which will be open until 5 p.m. — food vendors, a beer garden and 13 hours of authentic German entertainment. The festival closes at midnight.
AlpenSound will take the stage at 11 a.m., playing traditional Bavarian tunes presented in a non-traditional format. Florida-based The Europa Band takes the stage at 5 p.m. with energetic Oktoberfest music. Throughout the day, Horn will yodel, perform skits and coordinate contests and other activities.
Anyone looking to step back in time can visit the “Deutschland Über Alles” exhibit of old German culture on display at the historic Old Liberty County Jail and Museum. It will be open from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16.
Hinesville’s OktoberFest is a partnership between Fort Stewart Morale, Welfare and Recreation; the Hinesville Downtown Development Authority; and Zum Rosenhof. David’s Home Inspections and GeoVista Credit Union are additional sponsors.
“In spite of frigid weather and our Fort Stewart troops being deployed in 2009, the crowds were very good last year and we are looking for an even larger crowd this year,” said Anka Hinze, owner of Zum Rosenhof and event co-organizer.
All activities are free to the public and vendors will sell souvenirs and food.
“It is very important to us that our community — especially those associated with the military — can enjoy and celebrate Oktoberfest without the burden of paying an entrance fee and we will continue to keep it a free event for as long as possible,” said Hinze, who is originally from Bad Kreuznach, Germany. She and her husband David Hinze bought Zum Rosenhof in 2007 to share their culture with the community.
