Camps organizing to help kids deal with deployments

A catch-and-release Bass Tournament Saturday is setfor Fort Stewart's Pond 1, Pineview Lake. All are invited to participate.

Fishermen may launch at first light (about 6:30 a.m.) and present their catch for the weigh-in at 11 a.m. Cash prizes, based on the number of participants, will be awarded for first through fifth places, largest fish, and youth category.

Winners will be determined by total weight of a five-fish maximum.  

Registration through Friday costs $20 for soldiers, retirees, family members and all youth 16 and younger. It costs $35 for civilians.  

Register at the Stewart and Hunter Pass and Permit Offices. The number at the Stewart office is 435-8061. The Hunter office number is 315-5163.

The cost to register Saturday will be $30 and $40. 

Boat rentals will be available at Holbrook Equipment Rental Center to valid ID cardholders only. Renters must present a boater safety card, available free through www.boatus.com.

 

Operation Purple Camps

Applications for Operation Purple camps will be available beginning March 19 on the National Military Family Association website.

The program gives military children, ages 7-17, the tools to help deal with the stresses of a parent's deployment. Priority will be given to children whose parents deployed between Sept. 11 and Dec. 12 and who have not been to an Operation Purple Camp.

According to the website, OPC camps are “a time for having fun, making friends, and reminding military kids that they are the nation's youngest heroes.” The camps are held during the summer.

 

Cross-fit training classes at Caro

Registration begins March 20 for cross-fit training that will start April 2 at Caro Fitness Center.

Classes are free, but size limited to 20 participants. The introduction will cover functional movement, workout of the day and high intensity boot-camp style workouts.

Classes will be from noon-1 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. They will be taught by Randy Ray, center manager, and Jeff Smith. Both are cross-fit level 1 trainers.

GC Golf Scrambles

The Hunter Garrison Commander’s 4-person Golf Scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. March 23 at Hunter Golf Club. The first 25 four-person teams to register can play. Register your team by March 21.

The cost is $35 for Taylors Creek and Hunter Golf Club members, active duty, retirees and Army civilians, $45 for civilian guests.

The Garrison Commander’s 4-Person Golf Scramble at Fort Stewart's Taylors Creek Golf Course will be on March 30, beginning at 1 p.m.

Registration costs the same as on Hunter. The registration deadline is March 28 or when the first 25 four-person teams have signed up.

Georgia Pre-K Lottery

Registration for the State Pre-K Lottery for the 2012-13 school year will close on March 23. The lottery will be April 3 at the Hunter Army Airfield Child Development Center.

Registration forms are available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. each day at the CDC. Forms and birth certificate must be turned in before the child's name can be placed in the lottery.

To qualify, a child must be 4 years old no later than Sept.1.

2012 Big Gobbler Contest registration

The registration deadline is March 23 for the 2012 Big Gobbler Contest, which will run March 24-May 15. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place.

Sign up at the Stewart or Hunter Pass & Permit office. Fees are $25 for military ID cardholders and $30 for civilians.

Only fresh turkeys will be scored. All beards counted 1 x weight of turkey, plus 2 x length of all beards, plus 10 x length of each spur.

Family Night at Stewart Lanes

Bring the family to Stewart Lanes Bowling Center to enjoy dinner and bowling at a special price from 4-7 p.m. March 25. The cost is $30 for a family of five. Spring Education Forum at Hunter

The Spring Education Forum that lets soldiers, family members and educators talk about issues and recommendations relevant to the education of military-connected students — especially in special education — will be from 9 a.m.-noon on April 5 at Hunter Club.

The event also will highlight recent community partnerships between Hunter Army Airfield and the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.

The forum will include a presentation from the Savannah-Chathams’ Department of Exceptional Children, followed by a question and answer session. It also will include a presentation on programs funded by the Department of Defense for military students.

Wild Adventures Trip

Spring Education Forum

A Spring Education Forum to get soldiers, family members and educators together on Fort Stewart to discuss issues and solutions relevant to military-connected students, will be from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. on April 18 in the Club Stewart Ballroom.

The forum focuses on students enrolled in public and DODEA schools. 

Parents are needed to discuss issues and possible solutions in proactive, upbeat discussion groups. Those interested in being delegates should call the School Liaison Office at 767-6533.
