Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation near Darien has set its 30th annual "Christmas on the Old Plantation" for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3.
Activities at the state historic site are from 6 to 9 each night.
A walk through majestic, centuries old live oaks along a candlelit path, will take visitors back in time to Christmas 1860. The antebellum plantation home will be decked out with old time Christmas finery, courtesy of the ladies of the Glynn County Garden Club Council. There will be candles, greenery and handmade holiday creations. Visitors will be greeted by costumed interpreters, including Gen. Robert E. Lee, in each room. Traditional Christmas carols will be sung on the front porch.
Re-enactors from the 26th Georgia Infantry and other units will portray a muster of the Glynn Guards and Brunswick Rifles militia units just a few months prior to the beginning of the Civil War. There will be musket drills, tactical demonstrations and portrayal of camp life. Several cannon will also be on hand with periodic firings throughout the night. Nighttime cannon firings are impressive event with flames shooting over 100 feet from their barrels.
Santa Claus will also be seated by the fireplace in the old plantation kitchen, dispensing Christmas cheer. Families may wish to bring a camera to have their children's picture taken with Santa. Hot wassail and other yuletide refreshments will be available.
Guests should plan on spending an hour to an hour and a half. Alternate transportation will be available for those who are handicapped. Admission is $7 for adults and $4 for children. Visitors are encouraged to bring flashlights and dress appropriately to the season.
Hofwyl is on US Highway 17, five miles south of Darien. Call 912-264-7333 for more information. The plantation is owned and operated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
