Civil War to break out in park Saturday

BRUNSWICK -- Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site will have a Civil War era encampment on Saturday.
The daylong event will feature a pre-war militia encampment, with musket drills and firings. The site is on Highway 17 between Darien and Brunswick
Troops from Company A of the 26th Georgia Infantry will portray the Glynn Guards, circa 1860. Park visitors will be able to walk through the encampment, speak to soldiers and learn what life was like for a typical Civil War soldier.
There will also be showings of the documentary "The Angel of Marye's Heights". The film is about Confederate Sgt. Richard Kirkland, who risked his life taking water to wounded Union soldiers after the Battle of Fredericksburg. The 30-minute film was shot partially at Hofwyl-Broadfield and will be shown at 1 and 3 p.m.
In addition, a special collection of family artifacts from the Civil War era will be on display in the Hofwyl museum. Guided tours of the antebellum plantation house will be held hourly from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The film "The People of Hofwyl Broadfield" will be shown regularly in the Visitor Center. Gates close at 5 p.m.
Admission is $6, senior admission (62 and over) is $5.50 and children are $3.50. Gates open at 9 a.m. Call (912) 264-7333 for more information.
