Commander to read children's story
Weekly FMWR briefing for Sept. 12

Maj. Gen. Robert "Abe" Abrams, commander of the Third Infantry Division, will be the guest reader at 3 p.m. Oct. 2 for the Military Child Education Coalition's continuing "Tell Me a Story" series.
The inspiring story, "Listen to the Wind," by Greg Mortenson and Susan L. Roth, will be the featured book.
Tell Me a Story is for children ages 4-12. Each registered family will receive a copy of the featured book. Hands-on activities, snacks and a fun learning experience also will be provided.

Top of the Rock 5K Fun Run
The 2011 "Top of the Rock 5K Fun Run," designed to give soldiers, their families and friends an opportunity to run together just for the fun of it, will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday in between the Quick Track and Newman Fitness Center.
There is no charge. Children in strollers are welcome.
Water stations will be set up. A timer will be set up at the finish line.
Registration can be completed at the race beginning at 6 a.m. and ending at 7:45 a.m. For more information, call 767-8326.

Kids Fishing Event at Hunter
Children under the age of 16 will get a chance to catch a few big ones during the Hunter Army Airfield Kids Fishing Event at Hallstrom Lake from 7-10 a.m. Saturday.
The event is an early recognition of Hunting and Fishing Day, which this year is on Sept. 24. Permit and state license fees will be waived.
DPW, Fish and Wildlife will have Hallstrom Lake well stocked for the kids' enjoyment. A fish cleaning station will be set up and a limited number of fishing poles will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Throughout the morning, there will be drawings for prizes, and snacks and drinks will be served.

Boys and Girls Club Kids Day at Stewart, Hunter

An activity-filled Boys and Girls Club Day is scheduled from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 17 at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield.
The event, planned to give parents and children a chance to spend some fun time together, will be at School Age Services building 6571 at Stewart and Hunter Splash Park at Hunter. There is no charge.
Inflatables will be set up at both sites. Door prizes will be awarded and refreshments served.
The Hunter day also will include a bike rodeo, bean bag toss, tug of war, jump rope, sack race, tattoos and music. At Stewart, the fun will include arts and crafts, face-painting, a bike rodeo and a NEOS game.

American Favorites on Thunder Run Menu
Are you hungry for some American favorites? They're on the menu Sept. 21 at Club Stewart's Thunder Run restaurant as part of their themed Wednesday evening offerings.
Thunder Run began offering themed menus catering to a variety of tastes last month. Other foods in the rotation are Italian, Mexican and Asian favorites.
Service is Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. The cost is $9.95 per adult and half-price for children ages 5-10. There is no charge for children 4 and under.

NFL Punt, Pass, & Kick
The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick will be at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Fort Stewart Youth Football Field on Greene Street.
Competition is free and open to all boys and girls, age 6-15 (age as of Dec. 31). Parents can register their children online at www.nflppk.com or visit Jordan Youth Gym to pick up a registration form.

Beat the Golf Pros at Taylors Creek
Do you and your golfing buddies have the skill to beat the pros at Taylors Creek Golf Course? You'll get your chance Sept. 24.
Here's the format: Two golf pros and a course staff member will challenge any four-person team in a "scramble" or "captain's choice" format.
All challengers will pay their respective greens fee (golf car free), with an additional $20 to be placed into a pot. For every team that beats the pros, the purse will be divided by the number of winners.

Family Fishing Event at Stewart
Pond 30 will be well stocked and the fish are likely to be biting for the Family Fishing Event from 7-10 a.m. on Sept. 24.
The event is to give family members a chance to enjoy time together fishing, as well as in observance of National Hunting and Fishing Day. Permit and state license fees will be waived. A limited number of poles will be available and bait (worms) will be provided while supplies last.
Active duty soldiers and their family members are invited. A fish-cleaning station will be set up by DPW Fish and Wildlife.

Managed Deer Hunts
Outdoor Recreation will conduct two managed hunts this hunting season in the Delta Range Complex footprint.
The first will be on Oct. 29, and the registration deadline is 5 p.m. Oct 17.
Active duty soldiers stationed at Fort Stewart and retirees may apply. There are 50 total slots available for each hunt, with 10 per cent offered to retirees.
Applications will be taken at Pass & Permit Offices on Fort Stewart and at Hunter.
Individuals will have the opportunity to take part in both a morning and afternoon hunt, with lunch provided. Game check and cleaning station will be provided by Fish and Wildlife. A $10 fee per hunter will be charged and is payable upon selection for the hunt. Assistance also is provided by DES game wardens.
A lottery will choose the 50 hunters.
Another hunt will be on Dec. 20, with a registration deadline of 5 p.m. Nov 28.

The hunts help manage deer, hog, and coyote populations on Fort Stewart, and promote good stewardship of federal lands.

Big Buck Contest Sign-up Under Way
Register now for a chance to win cash for the largest buck harvested on Fort Stewart or Hunter Army Airfield. Registration will continue until Oct. 21.
Registration fees are $30 for active duty, retired and family members, and $40 for civilians.
All deer harvested must be turned in to the Fish & Wildlife Branch, during their operating hours, for scoring.

Youth Sponsorship's Skidaway Narrows tour
Youth will explore the Skidaway Narrows by boat during a Child, Youth and School Services Youth Sponsorship trip on Oct. 1. The free excursion is open to CYSS-registered youth in grades, 5-12.
Participants will travel on the Intracoastal Waterway near Wormsloe Plantation, Isle of Hope and the Skidaway Island State Park as they learn about the history of the area and the local habitat.
The group will depart from Fort Stewart at 9 a.m. and from Hunter at 10 a.m.
Registration closes on Sept. 29. Registration is available online or at either the Stewart or Hunter Parent Central Services offices. There is a $5 fee for no-shows and for any cancellations made after Sept. 29.

Wild Hog Competition Sign-up
Registration is under way for the 2011 Wild Hog Competition, which continues through Dec. 31.
A civilian and an active duty winner will receive a large hog head mount, valued at $500.
Register by Oct. 11 at the Fort Stewart Pass & Permit Office. All participants must be a valid permit holder. There is a $5 entry fee.
The contest will be judged based on the number of hogs harvested during unmanaged hunts on Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. All hogs must be submitted at the Pass & Permit office or at the Fish and Wildlife office on Fort Stewart.
