Today I will review an action comedy that has me looking forward to retirement. That may sound odd coming from someone younger than 30, especially in our current economic climate, but I find Bruce Willis makes the difference.
Confused? Allow me to explain. “RED” stands for Retired and Extremely Dangerous. And that’s exactly how the CIA describes the characters that Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren play in their new big screen comic book adaptation of the same name. John Malkovich, Ernest Borgnine and Brian Cox (“Braveheart,” “The Born Identity” and “X2”) appear, and Richard Dreyfuss plays a villain. Lucky lady Mary Louis Parker gets to play Willis’ love interest. Color me jealous.
For me, “RED” was quite a surprise. It’s better than the trailer paints it to be. It’s wilder, more fun and stylish. The makers of the CW’s Nikita should take notes. This film is also very funny. I kinda wanted to see it again as soon as it was over. I especially wanted to see Willis’ trick stand-up move out of a spinning car — twice.
The worst thing about the movie is — minor spoiler alert — one of our heroes dies.
And the best thing about “RED,” aside from how funny it is and aside from how clever the dialogue is and aside from how cool Willis and Mirren are, is probably actor Karl Urban, the whippersnapper and main antagonist of the film. Bravo to whoever cast him in this more fully developed version of the character he played in “The Bourne Supremacy.”
I’m a big Karl Urban fan. I’ve followed the kiwi’s career (that’s slang for a native of New Zealand) since he portrayed Julius Caesar on television’s “Xena: The Warrior Princess.” He played Eomer in “Lord of the Rings” and recently he took the role of Bones in the new “Star Trek.”
