It’s official — students have packed up their books and trudged back into the classrooms for a brand new school year. And, as the old saying goes: While the kids are away, the adults will play. Don’t fret if you’re still craving family time, though -- there’s plenty to do on the weekends.
 
Aug. 7
Dorchester Yard Sale

Last weekend’s two-for-one “beat the heat” event at Dorchester Civic Center was such a success, organizers say they’ll do it again this Saturday. The yard sale and kids’ splash event will be from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at 1804 Islands Highway, Midway. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the civic center, donations will be accepted or vendors can rent a table for $25 and sell goods. Call 884-3342 or e-mail dorchesterciviccenter@yahoo.com.

Farmers market

The Hinesville farmers market will be from 4-8 p.m. in downtown Bradwell Park. The market offers fresh fruits and vegetables, seasonal items, local favorites, prepared foods, baked goods and more. “Steel Magnolias” auditions

The Hinesville Area Arts Council’s Liberty Theatre Company will have auditions for “Steel Magnolias” at 6:30 p.m. at the Mills House, 500 W. Oglethorpe Highway. The auditions are free and open to the public. Participants must be 16 or older. Rehearsal will begin Monday, Aug. 16. Pancake breakfast

VIP Office Supply and Applebee’s will have a pancake breakfast fundraiser for Staff Sgt. Jason Letterman from 8-10 a.m. at Applebee’s in Hinesville, 1492 E. Oglethorpe Highway. Tickets are $5. All proceeds benefit Letterman’s family while the sergeant recovers from severe injuries sustained while he was deployed to Iraq. For more information, call 877-5221 or 369-4909.
