Fall Soccer sign-up at Hunter
Registration continues until Friday for fall soccer leagues at Hunter Army Airfield for coed teams composed of boys and girls ages 5-13. Play will begin in September at Stauss Sports Complex on Hunter and at the Savannah YMCA.
The cost is $20 per child. A parents meeting will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at School Age Services, building 8805.

American favorites on Thunder Run Menu
Are you hungry for some American favorites? They're on the menu Aug. 24 at Club Stewart's Thunder Run restaurant as part of the themed Wednesday evening offerings.
Thunder Run began offering rotating, themed menus catering to a variety of tastes on Aug. 10. Italian cuisine will be featured Aug. 31. Other foods in the rotation are Mexican and Asian.
The buffet is every Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and costs $9.95 per adult and half-price for children ages 5-10. There is no charge for younger children.

GC Golf Scramble at Stewart
A Garrison Commander's 4-Person Golf Scramble at Taylors Creek Golf Course will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Aug. 26.
The cost is $35 for active duty, military retirees, Army civilians and golf club members. It is $45 for civilian guests. The event will accept the first 25 teams. Register your team by Aug. 24.

Operation Rising Star Contestant Sign-up
Singers from Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield can sign up to compete in Operation Rising Star, the Army's version of "American Idol," at Rocky's Zone.
The free competition is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and is open to active duty, National Guard or Reserve and family members who are at least 18. The sign-up deadline is Aug. 26.
The local Operation Rising Star opens its 2011 competition at Rocky's Zone on Aug. 30. Subsequent rounds will be on Sept. 6 and 13, with the finals scheduled for Sept. 20.
The first-place winner will receive $500 and advance to the 2011 finals. Second place will receive $250 and third place will receive $100. The Army-wide winner will receive an all expense paid, 3-day professional recording studio experience in Los Angeles.
The Spirit Award - $300 to a unit or family readiness group fund - will be given to the best supportive unit or FRG. Any Unit or FRG may compete for the Spirit Award regardless of contestant participation. Support will be determined each night by applause.

Mid Summer Knight's Read Grand Finale
Armor-clad warriors will stage a sword fight, skills of medieval times will be demonstrated and magicians and jugglers will perform to bring the Midsummer Knight's Read End of Summer Reading Program to a close Aug. 27.
The action will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the grass area behind the George P. Hays Library on Lindquist Road. There is no charge.
Shire of Fourth Castle, a local chapter of the Society of Creative Anachronism, will bring medieval times to life for the occasion. Its members come from Savannah, Hinesville, Pooler, Springfield, Rincon, Pembroke, Richmond Hill and Brooklet.

Registration under way for skeet/trap
Registration is under way for two skeet/trap shoots an opportunity. The friendly competitions will be on Fort Stewart Skeet and Trap Range in the Holbrook Pond Recreation Area on Aug. 25 and 27.
Scheduled are: the Rock of the Marne Soldier Shootout, Marne Muster and White Bird Shoot on Aug. 25, and the 50-bird Skeet/Trap tournament on Aug. 27. The events are opportunities for shooters at various skill levels to compete. Here is the schedule.

Rock of the Marne Soldier Shootout, Marne Muster and White Bird Shoot for the 50 Bird Skeet/Trap Event.
The Marne Soldier Shootout, a 25-bird event with a $5 entry fee, begins at 5 p.m. First-, second- and third-place shooters get their entry fee waived for 50 Bird Skeet/Trap Event.
There also is a $5 entry fee for the White Bird Shoot. Shoot times will be registered and there will be a free cookout for participants. Prizes will be awarded.

Aug. 27
The Fort Stewart 50 Bird Skeet/Trap Event gets under way at 8 a.m. with five divisions of competition: Rocky (expert); Dog Face (intermediate); Iron Mike (novice); Youth and Ladies, and Soldier.
First- and second-place prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries per division.
Shooters may elect to enter skeet or trap competition for $25, or enter both events at a cost of $40. Registration will be accepted until start of event.
Food will be provided free for competitors, but there will be a $5 charge for food for non-competitors.

Greens aerification at Hunter
Greens aerification will be taking place on Hunter Golf Club on Aug. 22 and Aug. 23. Nine holes on the course will be closed each day.
Aerification re-establishes and replenishes the putting surface. Once the aerification is complete, several days later, the greens will be top dressed to fill the holes. This entire process is based on weather conditions.

"Get Fit ... Be Strong" Boot Camp
Registration is under way for the upcoming CYSS "Get Fit ... Be Strong" Boot Camp.
This challenging physical training has been designed to increase strength, endurance, flexibility and confidence in youth ages 11-18.
The camp will take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sept. 6-29 at the Fort Stewart Youth Sports Baseball Complex at the corner of Hero and Coe Avenues.
The camp is free and registration will remain open through Sept. 2. Parents and guardians are allowed and encouraged to participate with their youth.

Big Buck Contest Sign-up Under Way
Register now for a chance to win a cash prize for the largest buck harvested on Fort Stewart or Hunter Army Airfield. Registration continues until Oct. 21.
Early bird registration fees are in effect until Sept. 9. They are $25 for active duty, retired and family members, and $35 for civilians.
Beginning Sept. 10, registration goes up to $30 and $40, respectively.
All deer harvested must be turned in to the Fish & Wildlife Branch, during their operating hours, for scoring.

Compete in a 9-pin No Tap Tournament on Sept. 3 (and the first Saturday of every month) at Marne Lanes Bowling Center 7:30-10 p.m. You might win as much as $500.

Beat the Golf Pros at Hunter/Stewart
Do you and your golfing buddies have the skill to beat the pros at Taylors Creek Golf Course and Hunter Golf Club? You'll get your chance on Sept. 10 at Hunter and Sept. 24 at Taylors Creek.
Here's the format: two golf pros and a staff member from Taylors Creek and Hunter will challenge any four-person team in a "scramble" or "captain's choice" format.
All challengers will pay their respective greens fees - golf car free - with an additional $20 to be placed into the event. For every team that beats the pros, the event purse will be divided by the number of winners.
