If you’re a fan of crime novels, today’s film will be right up your alley.
Author Michael Connelly is an American crime fiction writer. One of his characters, former FBI agent Terry McCaleb, was portrayed by Clint Eastwood in the film “Blood Work.” Now Matthew McConaughey takes a turn by playing criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller in “The Lincoln Lawyer,” which is in theaters now.
As Haller, MConaughey is a slick, savvy lawyer who is never afraid of his often-shady clients and who works out of his car rather than in an office. Haller plays the system like a well-tuned fiddle — that is until he gets played by his new client.
Ryan Phillippe, an actor who still can alternate between playing doe-eyed charm and frightening arrogance, is that client, a rich, serial rapist who hires the only man who can figure out he’s guilty, thus trapping him from doing a thing about it, thanks to a little thing called attorney/client privilege.
Yep, that’s Haller, his lawyer.
“The Lincoln Lawyer” is a very smart film with moxie and suspense. The great actors in the cast include Marisa Tomei, William H. Macy, Josh Lucas, John Leguizamo, the adorable Michael Pena, Bryan Cranston and “Bones” actress Michaela Conlin, who I hope to see in more films.
I haven’t seen a crime movie this good since 2007’s “Fracture,” starring Ryan Gosling and Anthony Hopkins. If you never saw that one, get it now.
As for “The Lincoln Lawyer,” I’m a fan! I think you will be, too.
