Not all tennis matches begin with love or end with it either.

Academy Award-winner Emma Stone and funny man Steve Carell face off in new movie drama "Battle of the Sexes" about two tennis stars with very different lifestyles who meet head-to-head in a competition.

The movie is based off a real-life tennis match that took place in 1973 between Billie Jean King, played by Stone, and Bobby Riggs, played by Carell. King was a fierce advocate for gender equality and women's rights. Riggs was a party boy who gambled his fortune away.

The two, who could not be more different, meet on the tennis court while the real drama of their lives plays out both behind the scenes and in the public eye.

This was a really important and serious time in the womens liberation movement, and it was one of the first times that a political issue was acted out in the circus-like atmosphere, co-director Jonathon Dayton told PEOPLE. It just felt incredibly relevant to todays time.

Sarah Silverman, Andrea Riseborough, Elisabeth Shue, Alan Cumming, and Eric Christian Olsen also star in the new film, set to hit theaters on Sept. 22. Valerie Faris also directed the movie with Dayton.
