Five for Families: 'Minions' provides laughs for families

Here are five movies from various platforms families may want to consider. Note: Since not all are appropriate for younger children, age recommendations are included.

In theaters: 'Minions'

The Dove Foundation refers to this prequel to the Despicable Me series as a blast and awarded the film its Dove Family-Approved seal for all ages. Minions is a movie that families will enjoy. The minions, childlike and innocent at times, provide several laughs and some adorable moments ... Kids love these mustard-colored minions, and so do a lot of us adults, the website states. Parents should note, however, the film does contain slapstick and physical fantasy violence. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 4 and older.

Redbox: 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2'

PluggedIn said while the films guffaw-inducing chicanery and Three Stooges-like pratfalls are aimed squarely at a 10-year-old audience that the films main message of help someone today is carried throughout. The film is rated PG for some violence. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 7 and older.

Netflix: 'The Secret of Roan Inish'

This film tells the story of a young Irish girl who visits her familys ancestral home and discovers her unusual family history. Chris Hicks wrote in his 1995 Deseret News review that the film was the best family movie to come along in some time and that it is utterly captivating from start to finish. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 7 and older.

Amazon Prime: 'Space Jam'

Common Sense Media says although Space Jam isnt likely to hold the attention of many people over the age of 12," the film's overall message is fairly positive as members of the Looney Tunes and basketball star Michael Jordan form a team to defeat a group of aliens. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 7 and older.

Amazon Instant: 'Mrs. Doubtfire'

Robin Williams stars as a man who disguises himself as an elderly housekeeper in order to spend time with his children. Common Sense Media states while the film is humorous, its really about the pain of separation and divorce and may be painful for children who fear separation. The film is rated PG-13 for some sexual references. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 11 and older.
