In some of todays most exciting news, Netflix announced it will renew "Stranger Things" for a third season, according to Variety.

The series tells the story of a group of kids who face off against the paranormal in a small Indiana town called Hawkins. The battles begin after a lab in the town opens up a door to an alternate universe called the Upside Down.

While few plot details are known about the third season, the Duffer Brothers, who write and produce the show, told IndieWire they are writing a story that will "focus more on character development than on expanding the scope of the show" and that season three would be almost weirdly more intimate and a lot of fun.

NME speculated that new episodes will launch in October 2018 or even 2019. But Digital Spy reported that we might see a new trailer in spring 2018.

The "Stranger Things" cast includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Millie Bobby Brown, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Dacre Montgomery and Sadie Sink. And although the third season hasnt started filming yet, according to Alt Press, most of the cast is slated to return to the show.

That includes bringing back the controversial character Kali, who appeared in the second season as a sister to one of the shows main characters, Eleven. Kalis character was featured in the seasons seventh episode, which drew heavy criticism for taking place outside the storys main narrative.

Executive producer Shawn Levy said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that theyve outlined four seasons for the show.

Hearts were heard breaking in Netflix headquarters when the Brothers made four seasons sound like an official end, and I was suddenly getting phone calls from our actors agents, Levy said. The truth is were definitely going four seasons and theres very much the possibility of a fifth. Beyond that, it becomes I think very unlikely.

The shows first season drew instant critical acclaim, despite no one knowing much about the show before it aired. In total, it received 18 Emmy nominations, winning five.

Season two, which Netflix released Oct. 27, played off similar themes as the first season and has also received positive reviews.
