Irene Myers has a Christmas list and she is checking it twice – not to see if the children on the list are naughty or nice, but to make sure each has an opportunity to enjoy Christmas.
A man known only as “Greg” supplied dozens of new toys that Myers will hand out to youngsters Saturday in front of her Hinesville home.
“My Angel has made sure that I have new toys to hand out to the children,” Myers said.
In addition to the new toys they will receive, each child also will get an unwrapped used toy to take home. The used toys were donated by friends and the Manna House.
Myers, who has a list of more than 300 children, knows it won’t be easy but she’s confident she’ll be able to meet the demand. In her tiny storage shed, toys wrapped in plastic bags are stacked up nearly to the ceiling.
Neighbor and friend Tim Cray said he knows Myers will see to it that every child walks away with a smile on his or her face.
“Irene is the type of person who will even take a present from under her tree and give it to a child just to make sure they have something to open on Christmas morning,” Cray said. “There are just not many people around like her anymore.”
Myer’s inspiration is simple.
“I don’t feel a child should be without a Christmas gift,” she said. “While one or two gift may not seem like a lot, it may be the only gift that child receives, and I want to make sure the children who get a call from me on Saturday won’t do without.”
Myers also donated toys recently to Kids Café on Memorial Drive.
She is looking for a volunteer to help hand out gifts at 1 p.m. Saturday. To donate a toy or volunteer, call Myers at 570-3344.
