The Liberty County Historical Society will present U.S. Army Air Force veteran Robert H. Honeycutt, 83, during its meeting at 6 p.m. May 22 at Walthourville Baptist Church in Walthourville.
Honeycutt, who was a prisoner of war during World War II, will share his story of being captured by the Nazis in 1944 in Austria. He will detail his experiences in the brutal prison camp and the 800-mile march in below-zero weather.
Honeycutt weighed 180 pounds at the beginning of the march and 99 pounds when he was freed by the Allies. He was called the “11th man” as he was the cameraman of his crew and has written a book by the same title that sells for $10. He will have his book, photos, maps and other memorabilia on hand.
The public is invited to attend. The program will last about an hour. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the church social hall.
