The annual Walk to Dorchester will be held Saturday, June 17.

The walk begins at 6 a.m. at Briar Bay Park, 3850 Barrington Ferry Road, in Riceboro, and ends 9.5 miles later at the historic Dorchester Academy, 8787 E. Oglethorpe Highway, in Midway.

The walk’s length replicates the distance Black children had to travel to get to the school on foot.

The refurbished Dorchester Academy now includes a museum and exhibits on the Civil Rights era. It was a retreat for the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders of the civil rights movement.

The annual walk is the primary fundraiser for the Dorchester Improvement Association.
