Bridges closing to all traffic in preparation for Hurricane Michael

SAVANNAH – the Georgia Department of Transportation is closing the Talmadge Memorial Bridge on US 17 in Savannah-Chatham County at 9 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the coastal region due to anticipated gale-force winds.

GDOT is also closing the Sidney Lanier Bridge on US 17/SR 25 in Glynn County at 6 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 10 in anticipation of gale-force winds from Hurricane Michael.
The predicted strength of the wind at these bridges’ elevations will render vehicles susceptible to incidents.  Motorists attempting to navigate vehicles across the bridges in conditions with the high wind levels anticipated from Hurricane Michael may not be able to properly control the vehicles. The bridges are being closed for the safety of the public.

An extensive inspection of both bridges must be performed after Hurricane Michael passes therefore the closure will remain in place until further notice.
Evacuees should allow themselves extra time to reroute due to bridge closure; remain patient; and exercise caution in their travels.
