The face of poverty no longer is what one might imagine. It includes two-income working families, single parents, men and women who have lost their jobs, those who cannot work because of illness or disabilities and people who only can find minimum-wage work because they lack education and job skills.
Community Action agencies reach out to low-income people in their communities, address their multiple needs through a comprehensive approach, develop partnerships with other community organizations, involve low-income clients in the agency’s operations and administer a full range of coordinated programs designed to have a measurable impact on poverty.
Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Agency is making use of the monies received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to weatherize homes. The monies received through the stimulus program have made additional resources available to the clients they serve.
Weatherization is the primary energy-conservation program for low-income individuals. The program provides free energy-conservation measures.
Clients eligible for services must be at 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Fifty percent of the applications processed must be from the elderly and handicapped and families with small children. Community Action Agencies believe all people deserve a step up.
