Donald Lovette and Freda McKnight are convinced the key to steering teens onto the path of achievement is showing them the way. The Coastal Electric Cooperative Foundation recently awarded each of their organizations $5,000 to do that.
Lovette is president of the Eleven Black Men of Liberty County, a non-profit organization that works with 12 young men from middle school until their high school graduation.
McKnight is the corporate outreach director for the YMCA of Coastal Georgia and one of the organizers of the Liberty County YMCA Teen Achievers. She and a cadre of volunteers donate time during the school year to work with 25 students.
Both programs encourage students to achieve academically, serve the community and be role models for other teens.
A $5,000 grants from the Coastal Electric Cooperative Foundation will pay for 10 Teen Achievers to attend a one-week Christian values conference at the YMCA Retreat Center in Black Mountain, NC. The teens are hosting various fundraisers to raise additional money so that all 25 of them can attend.
The grant to the Eleven Black Men will pay for tutoring, computer equipment and some of the expenses for the organization’s banquet.
The academic performance of students in this program is monitored. If students need help in particular subjects, the Eleven Black Men pay for certified teachers to tutor them.
The banquet is an important part of the program. It’s a time for the students to show their appreciation and for the community to celebrate their achievement. A guest speaker at the banquet gives the students about the need for focus.
