MOULTRIE — A pioneer in the Vidalia sweet onion industry, Robert Dasher of G&R Farms in Glennville has been named the 2010 Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year. The announcement was made recently during the Willie B. Withers luncheon at the 2010 Sunbelt Ag Expo farm show in Moultrie.
The award honors excellence in agricultural production and management, and leadership in community and farm organizations. The award also recognizes family contributions in producing safe food, fiber and shelter for U.S. consumers.
J. Thomas Ryan, president of Swisher International Inc. of Jacksonville, praised Dasher and his family for their farming success.
“Over his long career, Robert has overcome adversity to become an excellent farmer and a devoted steward of natural resources,” Ryan said.
This is the 21st consecutive year that Swisher International has sponsored the Farmer of the Year award.
“I am humbled and honored to receive this award,” Dasher said. “I thank Swisher International, the Sunbelt Expo and all of the companies that provide prizes for this award. I especially salute the other state winners. They are all outstanding agricultural producers. They contribute to their communities and they are supported by loving families.”
Dasher also raises beef cattle and grows corn, soybeans, peanuts, cotton, wheat, rye, pecans and hay.
