The list of expenses for parents transitioning their high school seniors into college is often long and non-negotiable.
Cathy O’Hagan, with V.I.P. Office Supplies, and a small group of local organizations are giving parents a break while fostering a sense of community appreciation in students.
O’Hagan agreed to print any student’s graduation invitations and name cards at no cost if the student logs community service hours with local groups, such as Keep Liberty County Beautiful.
“For every two hours of community service, they’ll get 25 invitations, up to 100 invitations,” O’ Hagan said.
Students from Bradwell Institute, Liberty County High School and Long County High School are eligible for the program.
“It’s estimated that they’re worth about a dollar per invitation,” O’ Hagan said. “And name cards are more.”
This is the first time O’Hagan has offered the exchange to area students and she said she’s excited about the prospects of helping both students and the community.
“We believe everybody should have an opportunity to get announcements,” she said.
KLCB Executive Director Sara Swida said she was thrilled to hear about the program and jumped at the chance to provide interested students with volunteer opportunities. Swida said participants can get involved in area cleanups and help out with tasks at the group’s headquarters.
O’Hagan said students also can count the hours toward their graduation community service requirements, but the time must be logged after students enroll in the VIP program and must be coordinated through graduation coaches and approved organizations.
Interested parents or students can call O’Hagan at 877-5209, Swida at 368-4888, or talk with a high school graduation coach. The deadline to enroll is May 9.
