Former Today Show co-anchor and new CBS News anchor Katie Couric was on assignment at Fort Stewart Friday preparing for a live broadcast which will aire January 8.
Fort Stewart spokesman Lt. Col. Randy Martin said Couric interviewed 3rd Infantry Division Commander Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch and two others for a weeklong series on honor and sacrifice. "The schedule was very tight. We went from not knowing whether she would be here or not," he said. The command was notified of the visit Thursday night. Couric arrived 8:30 Friday morning and departed the installation around noon, Martin said.
Couric and CBS Evening news staff will return to Fort Stewart Monday afternoon to anchor a live show from a motor pool on the installation. Couric is anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and also a 60 Minutes correspondent and the anchor of CBS News primetime specials. She completed a 15-year run as co-anchor of NBC News' "Today" in May 2006. While at NBC, she was also contributing anchor for "Dateline NBC." She was a "Today" substitute co-anchor from February 1991 until taking over the job permanently two months later. She joined NBC News in 1989 as deputy Pentagon reporter before serving as its first national correspondent in June 1990. Her NBC tenure included two stints covering the Gulf War.

More than 30 soldiers from the 1st Brigade Combat Team headed for Iraq Wednesday, with more than 4,000 more to follow by January 15. Military commanders predict a full deployment of the division's more than 20,000 soldiers by the end of the year.
