Coalition kicks off sock drive for the homeless

The Liberty Regional Homeless Coalition has kicked of its 2018 “Socks For The Homeless Drive,” with the distribution of its Christmas stocking boxes.

“Of all the items provided to the homeless, socks are most needed, and yet the least donated,” Liberty County Homeless Coalition president Jim McIntosh said.

In response to the more than 350 homeless students who receive support from the school systems, as well as the adult homeless population, the coalition is asking the community to provide new socks and underwear in all sizes.

This year’s collection has expanded to help support young children in the local Head Start Programs and community based services.

Yellow Cab of Hinesville is co-sponsoring the drive, by collecting donations from its patrons.

This year’s drive will have a special contest for each of its donation locations.

“We are inviting all of our sock teams to help us add a little fun and excitement to this year’s event,” McIntosh said. “We have asked each location to take the donation box that we have delivered, and add a little more Christmas flare. They are allowed to decorate the box to their heart’s content and send us a picture for our Facebook page. The public gets to select their favorite decorated box, by checking thumbs up. The location with the most thumbs up will be the winner and get to name the school to receive a special Christmas gift card, for school supplies valued at $200.”

The winning location and school will be announced Friday, Dec. 21.

The following locations will accept donations until Dec. 28:
