Atlanta Judicial District Attorney Tom Durden has admitted that he was driving on under the influence of alcohol last Wednesday afternoon and issued an apology.
Durden's letter, which said he has enter rehabilitation for what he called a drinking problem, came Tuesday, the same day the Tattnall County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol Post 18, issued a brief press release. It confirmed that Durden was indeed charged with DUI, pending further test results. The press release stated that the accident occurred on Stoney Hill Church Road in Glennville but did not elaborate any further on the incident.

Dear Citizens:
On Wednesday, September 5, 2007, I did a very unwise thing by driving my vehicle on a rural road in Tattnall County while under the influence of alcohol.
After my automobile slid into the ditch, I called the Tattnall County Sheriff's Department. When the deputies arrived along with a few Georgia State Patrol troopers, the law enforcement officers observed that I had been driving and placed me under arrest. The actions of the officers were entirely appropriate.
It is a credit to their law enforcement departments, that these law enforcement officers will perform their duties regardless of who you are or what position you hold.
As a result, I have proceeded, through in-patient, as well as, outpatient counseling to address my problem. I also expect the judicial process to proceed to handle my case in a normal and routine manner. I do not expect nor would I accept any preferential treatment. My case will be handled just like the case of anyone else who is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
I offer my sincere apology to the citizens of this circuit and my fellow law enforcement officers.
