ATLANTA — Georgia’s largest school district will participate in a trial run of a new system evaluating teachers and principals on students’ progress.

Gwinnett County will take part in the evaluation system called the Race to the Top project, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Most educators agree that the state’s current evaluation system makes it difficult to distinguish good teachers from bad. The current system rates teachers’ performances as satisfactory or unsatisfactory.

Under the new evaluation system, teachers will be rated as exemplary, proficient, needs development or ineffective. Fifty-six of Gwinnett’s schools and 5,109 teachers are participating in an expanded pilot that is set to be in place in 26 local school districts next year and throughout the state by 2014-15.
