Chris Anderson has been chosen the new principal of Liberty Elementary School where he will take over when classes resume in January.
Anderson, an assistant principal at Bradwell Institute, was chosen by the Liberty County Board of Education at a called meeting Wednesday. Five members voted to accept Interim Superintendent Harley Grove’s recommendation to promote Anderson. District 1 Member Mattie Hicks voted no and Chairman Lily Baker abstained.
Anderson said he was very excited to be named to the top job at LES and that he won’t be making any big changes until he learns as much as he can about the school and its people. “I’m a sponge; I absorb information,” he said, “and we’re in mid-game here.”
He perceives a principal’s role as that of a leader of instruction, saying he plans to improve student achievement and to held accountable for that.
Anderson is replacing principal Dr. Matilda Riles, who retired well into the current academic year.
BI Principal Dr. Vicki Albritton said the appointment made her “happy and sad. Happy for Mr. Anderson and Liberty Elementary, but sad because we are losing him here.”
She had high praise for Anderson, saying, “This is a man who truly thinks outside the box.” Bradwell will miss him, Albritton said, recalling a recent fundraiser which ended with Anderson taped to a pillar, feet high off the floor.
Participants purchased pieces of duct tape until they had enough to attach Anderson to a spot high on an interior support column.
Anderson, 36, and his wife have three elementary-age children and live in the Pooler area.
Anderson has lived in the coastal Georgia area all his life. He has been in education for 14 years and is completing his last semester of course work for a doctorate at Georgia Southern University.
