Liberty County Board of Education members gained more headway on the district master plan involving long-term projects within the district Tuesday night when they approved conceptual plans for remodeling and renovations at the Liberty County Schools Performing Arts Center and construction of a new fieldhouse and placement of concession stands at Bradwell Institute’s Olvey Field.
The conceptual plan for Olvey Field includes a reconfigured football stadium, joint home-visitor concession stand near the end zone closest to Gen. Stewart Way and a newly constructed field house on the opposite end zone. The conceptual plan for the performing arts center includes relocating and expanding the kitchen, adding a concession stand near the current auditorium and updating heating and air conditioning.
Board members also approved a bid to make parking lot improvements at Liberty County High School. The work will include patching and overlayment to reinforce the surface.
In other meeting news, early attendance reports from all schools show the student population at the start of the school year is just slightly below numbers from the end of last school year. The nine-month count for 2009-10 was 10,144 and current rolls show roughly 10,350 students enrolled in county schools.
The school board will meet at 9 a.m. Aug. 24 for a work session and will hold its next regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 14.
