Liberty Elementary School student Duane Fairfax won the 2008 DARE essay writing contest. Fairfax received a first-place certificate from LCSO Deputy Vernecia Mills. Mills and Deputy Cpl. James Caines, who taught Fairfax’s DARE class.
DARE is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teach children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug- and violence-free lives.
DARE was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and is now in 75 percent of the nation’s school districts and in more than 43 countries.
