Jessica Wilkins from The Heritage Bank recently conducted a financial-literacy workshop with fourth-grade students at Waldo Pafford Elementary School.
Students learned vocabulary words such as income, expenses, budget, savings, interest, opportunity cost and many others. As an activity, each student was given a monthly income and had to create a budget. The students used worksheets to keep track of all expenses for the month.
Students were able to make choices about the types of housing and cars that they preferred. With each choice the student made, they learned the cost associated with that decision. The students used addition and subtraction to see if they were within or over their budgets. Wilkins stressed that it is not too early to begin saving now.
