The scholarship is funded by a nonprofit organization established by the longtime educator and Liberty County school board member in 1990.

The $500 scholarship is offered to encourage and assist students who wish to become educators.

Each year, applicants are solicited from local high schools. Criteria include community commitment, leadership skills, volunteer services, financial need, recommendations, college acceptance and scholastic achievement.

Gatch is the daughter of the late John Gatch and Jodie Dunn of Liberty County.

She plans to attend Georgia Southern University and major in special education, hoping to eventually earn a doctorate. She has worked for two years to contribute to her college expenses.

She says she has wanted to become a teacher since she was 5. She has been influenced by her mother, who teaches at Liberty County Elementary School.

She says her mother has been a strong and positive influence in her life.
