EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND — As a member of The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes, Cadet Joshua Barnard Rodgers of Hinesville participated this month in the 2010 Diamond Jubilee of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
Rodgers, who plays bass drum, was among 80 members of the Regimental Band and Pipes who took part in the nightly festival of music and demonstrations by military organizations from around the world.
Set against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle since 1950, the Tattoo attracts thousands to Scotland and its BBC television production is watched by millions of people around the world. The Tattoo began Aug. 6 and concluded Aug. 28.
“To say this is a great honor is a huge understatement,” said retired Navy Cmdr. Mike Alverson, director of bands. “This is one of those rare opportunities when we can show the world what we are, where we are from and what we can do. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to represent the United States of America in Scotland.”
This is The Citadel’s second invitation to the Tattoo, the largest of its kind in the world.
As the only organization invited from the United States, The Citadel is “America’s Band in 2010.”
“The opportunity to represent The Citadel, the state of South Carolina and the United States of America on an international stage is exciting and humbling,” said Jim Dillahey, director of The Citadel Pipe Band. “It is with immense pride that that Regimental Band and Pipes accept the honor of being ‘America’s Band in 2010’ in Scotland.”
