SAVANNAH — Armstrong State University will celebrate Latino Heritage Month from Tuesday, Sept. 15, through Thursday, Oct. 15, in connection with the national celebration, which promotes Latino heritage and culture.

The Hispanic Outreach and Leadership at Armstrong program has organized more than 30 events for this year’s celebration, which will take place on Armstrong’s main campus at 11935 Abercorn St., the Armstrong Liberty Center at 740 E. Gen. Stewart Way in Hinesville and various downtown Savannah locations.

All events are free and open to the public.

Highlights from the 2015 Latino Heritage Month schedule are:

• Spanish Film Festival — “El Libertador”/ “The Liberator”
6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 16
Ogeechee Theater at the Student Union/Savannah Campus  

• Fiesta Day
Noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17
Residential Plaza/Savannah campus
Authentic Latin American food, music and performances will be featured.

• Passport to Latin America
Noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22:
Liberty Center, Room 100
The event includes food, music, facts and more of four Latin American countries.

• DACA — A Dream Deferred Lecture and Exhibit
6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24
The Beach Institute/502 E. Harris St.
Jerry Gonzalez from the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials will speak on the legalities and importance of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Ricardo Yair Muñoz joins the presentation to discuss his recent visit to his native Mexico after 14 years.

In collaboration with the NAACP, Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha Inc. will present a lecture on Latino civil rights throughout United States history.

• Fiesta Latina on the River: LASO
10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10
John Rousakis Plaza/River Street
The event will feature food, music and cultural dances on River Street.  

• Iron Chef: Latin America
6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15
Student Union Galley/Savannah campus

Other events include Brown Bag Series lunches with Spanish-speaking faculty and staff, a Spanish Film Club series and more.
