LUDOWICI — The Long County Board of Education honored the system’s teacher of the year for 2009 at its August meeting.
The three finalists were Smiley Elementary School Teacher of the Year Jenny Futch, Walker Middle School Teacher of the Year Karen Harrell and Long County High School Teacher of the Year Denise Montgomery.
Montgomery, a math teacher, was named the school system’s teacher of the year and given a plaque.
“Ms. Montgomery goes above and beyond to ensure that the students succeed. She is a valuable asset to our school and I’m proud to have her on my staff,” LCHS Principal Dr. Delores Mallard said.
Montgomery has been teaching for 19 years. This is her fifth year in Long County.
In other business:
• The board approved the hiring of three new employees at the high school: Anthony Brown as teacher, Brian Pruitt as a physical education paraprofessional and Bobby Hall as the in-school suspension paraprofessional. The BoE also hired Craig Nobles to be the system’s resource officer, and nine substitute teachers.
• The board voted to accept a pay reduction for themselves. The reduction will be equal to the amount other school system employees lost from their salaries because of furloughs.
• The board voted to allow the Blazing Angels Radio Flying Club to use Veteran’s Stadium on Saturdays and Sundays to fly their aircraft. However, board member Dempsey Golden opposed the request. He said flying should be restricted to Sunday afternoons because the noise may interrupt church services on Sunday mornings.
• The BoE voted to accept a bid for sales of milk products from Colberg Dairy, LLC, and the bid for bread products from Flowers Baking Company. Both were approved for the 2009-10 school year.
